 What is Malaria?

Malaria is a disease of the blood that is caused by the Plasmodium parasite, which is transmitted from person to person by a particular type of mosquito.

Once an infected mosquito bites a human, the parasites multiply in the host’s liver before infecting and destroying red blood cells.

People who get malaria are typically very sick with high fevers, shaking chills, and flu-like illness.

Once the parasites are inside your body, they travel to the liver, where they mature. After several days, the mature parasites enter the bloodstream and begin to infect red blood cells. The parasites continue to infect red blood cells, resulting in symptoms that occur in cycles that last two to three days at a time.
